Waiting on Design Approval

We have received many questions about the progress of the Fish Creek Mountain Bike Skills Park, and we have not done a good job in keeping you informed. Here is what is happening:

  • The design for the skills park is currently under review by Risk Management, a division of the Government of Alberta’s Treasury Board and Finance Ministry that assesses the provincial government’s exposure to legal risk/liability.
  • Fish Creek Park management presented Risk Management with the professionally-created design in May 2015.
  • Risk Management came back with questions about the skills park design in September 2015, and the CMBA responded to their queries in 15 days.
  • Since that time, Risk Management has not provided updates to the CMBA or [to the best of our knowledge] to Fish Creek Park management, and has not provided any estimates in terms of when the design review will be complete.
  • The Fish Creek Mountain Bike Skills Park has been approved by Alberta Parks. However, it cannot be built until the design has been approved by Risk Management.

That is the current situation. We are waiting on design approval. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and understanding.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully the project won’t be delayed too much longer by Risk Management. A bike park would be such an asset to South Calgary communities!

Agreed. Can public write to Risk Management and ask what the hold up is?

I don’t see why you couldn’t. Not sure who to write to – the Finance Minister?

Hello Gail I am wondering if you received any response or confirmation of if this is the appropriate person to contact?
I have sent an email as well but before I encourage anyone else to do the same I wanted to be sure.

Hi Peter! A couple of us just happened to be out by the skills park site last Saturday morning, and watched the bulldozer as it did its final pass before leaving the area. Needless to say, we were shocked and dismayed.

The CMBA was not notified of any work being done on the site. We sent an email to Fish Creek Provincial Park management on April 24, but haven’t heard back. We contacted another Parks employee yesterday about this and some other issues, and we’re hoping to hear back on May 2 or 3.

On the plus side, whoever was driving the dozer did a good job in maintaining the grade – drainage shouldn’t be an issue. On the negative side, we’re going to need more clay fill…

Thanks David…my kids came home crushed. Hopefully the park is still a go.

Hey hey, what's going on?
